Research Project: Improving the Chicken Genome and Enhancing Genetic Resistance to Marek's Disease

Location: Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory

Project Number: 5050-31320-009-13
Project Type: General Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2013
End Date: Sep 14, 2014

Objective:
1) Improve the chicken genome sequence assembly, and 2) Enhance genetic resistance to Marek's disease in chicken.

Approach:
To improve the chicken genome, we will (1) provide Red Jungle Fowl DNA to Washington School of Medicine at St. Louis for sequencing (PacBio, Moleculo, etc.) and (2) based on the information, develop genetic maps, especially for regions that are deficieint in genetic markers. To enhance genetic resistance to Marek's disease, we will use allele-specific expression in response to Marek's disease virus challenge to identify SNPs that will be used to genotype resource populations.
