Research Project: Development of Sampling Plans for Botanical Dietary Supplements

Location: Nutrient Data

Project Number: 8040-52000-065-03
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 01, 2013
End Date: Aug 31, 2015

Objective:
The Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL) will research information for the purpose of developing representative sampling plans and for planning the scope of pilot and national studies for the analysis of botanical dietary supplements for the Dietary Supplement Ingredient Database (DSID). NDL will provide leadership, personnel, administrative support, and space to carry out this project.

Approach:
1) Evaluate NHANES 2007-08, NHANES 2009-10 dietary supplement data files, including 24-hr recall information, to identify the frequency of reporting and types of products reported (and trends) for the botanical dietary supplement ingredients of interest. 2) Evaluate other resources, including DSID information, information from other surveys, information from trade associations, store and internet surveys, and the Nutrition Business Journal to identify patterns, product categories, and channel and brand information. 3) Identify gaps in information needed to develop representative sampling plans for proposed ingredients. NDL will consult with the Cooperator at appropriate times for input on the process and decisions for this project.
