Research Project: Characterization of Resistance in Cantaloupe and Honeydew to Cucurbit Yellow Stunting Disorder Virus and Sweetpotato Whitefly

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-21220-005-15
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2013
End Date: Jun 30, 2016

Objective:
Develop orange flesh, western U.S. type shipping melons resistant to Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus and sweetpotato whitefly.

Approach:
Field tests for assaying genetic resistance to Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus and sweetpotato whitefly. Identify and confirm new potential sources of resistance, characterize and determine inheritance of resistance reactions, select resistant individuals from segregating populations for introgression of resistance genes into elite melon germplasm.
