Research Project: Sampling for Lepidopteran Infestation in Walnuts

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality

Project Number: 5302-43000-037-37
Project Type: General Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 01, 2013
End Date: May 01, 2014

Objective:
Compare, between test sites, the proportion of walnuts infested by codling moth and the proportion navel orangeworm.

Approach:
Obtain samples of walnuts from study sites during harvest, and keep in cold storage until evaluation. Crack open individual walnuts, and note defect categories, if any. If insect infested, categorize damage based on presence of life stages, webbing, or frass. PIs will meet in annual conferences in Portland and Bodega Bay to compare results and plan future research.
