Research Project: Assessment of Drought and Disease Resistance of Cottons with Different Genetic Backgrounds

Location: Plant Stress and Germplasm Development Research

Project Number: 3096-21000-019-12
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2014
End Date: Dec 31, 2014

Objective:
1) Confirm the diversity in the range of drought tolerance and disease resistance on selected entries identified during Year 1 of this study. 2) Identify and/or develop lines with stacked drought tolerance and disease resistance traits for release to public and private cotton breeding programs.

Approach:
We will perform field re-evaluations of water stress responses of the best lines from our 2013 drought study in replicated plots through the use of a fast screening assay. This assay permits a high throughput analysis of cotton responses to drought. We will impose differential irrigation, and lines will be re-evaluated for drought avoidance and/or tolerance. Lines shown to exhibit enhanced drought tolerance will then be evaluated for disease resistance.
