Objective:
To evaluate performance of an existing method for mapping evapotranspiration and drought using a new, improved satellite-based land-surface temperature Earth System Data Record (ESDR).

Approach:
USDA-ARS will apply a remote sensing algorithm for mapping evapotranspiration (ET) and drought to a geostationary satellite ESDR to be developed under this project. ESDR improvements over existing land-surface temperature products include improved specification of surface emissivity and cross-calibration using polar orbiting satellite data. ET estimates will be compared with observations on the ground using eddy covariance (EC) flux equipment to evaluate mapping accuracy. Drought assessments from the improved ESDR will be compared with drought classifications from the North American Drought Monitor and standard drought indices.
