Research Project: Cryotherapy of Horticultural Crops

Location: Plant Germplasm Preservation Research Unit

Project Number: 3012-21000-014-09
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 01, 2014
End Date: Apr 30, 2019

Objective:
Develop cryotherapy technologies to eradicate diseases from Horticultural crops, primarily Citrus. 1) Develop cryopreservation technologies. 2) Use these technologies to screen diseased plant materials and determine if diseases have been eliminated. 3) Optimize techniques, as necessary, for improved regrowth of plants after liquid nitrogen treatments.

Approach:
Cryopreservation techniques will involve the use of tissue culture, vitrification cryopreservation methods, microscopy, as well as molecular tools to determine the presence or absence of pathogens. Experiments will be performed to optimize survival of plant tissues and eradication of bacteria, viruses, and/or viroids after liquid nitrogen treatment.
