Research Project: Systematic Entomology Studies Using Molecular Analyses

Location: Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-290-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 1, 2019

Objective:
To provide laboratory support for molecular-related research (e.g., PCR and DNA extraction) to further augment phylogentic and systematic analysis of Hemiptera and related insects.

Approach:
ARS will collect samples of insects and mites from both field and/or various museums. The Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History, Laboratories of Analytical Biology (LAB) using their state-of-art and high throughput equipment will extract, amplify, sequence, and analyze DNA from these samples for use in ongoing systematic studies of insects and mites. Results and data will be shared with ARS which will subsequently make it available to the scientific community.
