Research Project: Automatic Control Systems to Advance Pesticide Spray Application Technologies

Location: Application Technology Research

Project Number: 5082-21620-010-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 31, 2019

Objective:
Investigate and design sprayer control systems with integration of advanced sensor technologies to characterize crop canopy structure and insect and disease pressures.

Approach:
In cooperation with the ARS Application Technology Research Unit, Wooster, OH, perform the following: Investigate different sensor technologies including laser scanning sensors, infrared vision devices and imaging techniques to detect crop structures and insect and disease pressures, and then develop a fast response, high resolution universal controller to automatically manipulate spray application rates based on crop and pest characteristics for different types of sprayers.
