Research Project: Identification of New Sources of Resistance and Development of Resistant and Tolerant Potato Varieties to Zebra Chip Disease

Location: Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research

Project Number: 2050-21000-035-009-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2014
End Date: May 31, 2019

Objective:
Development and introduction of new potato germplasm and varieties with acceptable levels of resistance to zebra chip disease to reduce pre- and post-harvest losses associated with this disease.

Approach:
Solanum species-derived potato germplasm and international cultivars will be screened to identify new sources of resistance (or tolerance) to zebra chip (ZC), by comparing vector response, transmission efficiency, and pathogen development among genotypes. Germplasm displaying resistance will be hybridized with adapted chipping, processing, and fresh market cultivars for the development of ZC resistant varieties in each market class suitable for the US potato industry.
