Research Project: Bioinformatic Tools and Analysis for Agricultural Research Using the Next Generation of Bioinformaticists

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-005-021-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2014
End Date: Sep 14, 2019

Objective:
Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) is a Historic Black College or University (HBCU) and has the only formal bioinformatics educational program in the state of Mississippi, but has limited capacity in data generation. The USDA-ARS Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Unit (GBRU) produces significant amounts of data, but has limited staffing to handle all the bioinformatic analysis needed for its clients. By working together the project should have positive impact on the development of new bioinformaticists and USDA-ARS will be able to process data in a quicker and better manner.

Approach:
By working together, Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) bioinformatic graduate students will develop bioinformatic scripts or bioinformatic pipelines addressing the research needs of Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Unit (GBRU). MVSU graduate students will validate said programs on data generated by ARS and when appropriate help with other aspects of analysis. GBRU will provide the students the scope of the project and general logic flow of the analysis. GBRU will assist in the evaluation of the work generated by the students. While working together with MVSU graduate students will be exposed to real world bioinformatics analysis that in some instances can be used as thesis topics and GBRU will be able to increase its speed of data analysis and design new computer scripts or pipelines to process that data.
