Research Project: Development of Novel Grasses for use in Low-Maintenance Applications in Temperate Growing Environments

Location: Forage and Range Research

Project Number: 2080-21000-018-001-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2015
End Date: Dec 31, 2019

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop novel turf grass germplasm and technologies for use in low-maintenance growing environments.

Approach:
Collaborative experiments will be designed and implemented either in the field or laboratory for the evaluation of novel turf grass germplasm by the Forage and Range Research Laboratory, Logan, Utah, USA (hereafter FRRL), and Inner Mongolia Hotision & Monsod Drought Resistance Greening Company, Ltd., Hohot, Inner Mongolia, China (hereafter MONSOD). Evaluations will include but are not limited to field measurements of turf quality, abiotic stress tolerance, and seed production. Laboratory evaluations will be conducted at FRRL or MONSOD that includes: (1) collection and taxonomic classification of native Chinese grasses; (2) seed increase of collected grasses; (3) assessment of molecular marker or DNA sequence relatedness; and (4) elucidation of genetic mechanisms behind value-added traits (e.g., turf quality, and abiotic stress tolerance).
