Objective:
This research will investigate the role that phloem loading plays in determining plant primary metabolic responses to greater photoassimilate availability. We will investigate agricultural and model species with different phloem loading strategies and use transgenic plants with altered contents of sucrose transporters to test the broad hypothesis that species with different phloem loading strategies will have fundamentally different responses to elevated [CO2] via differential abilities to enhance export capacity and by differential effects of elevated sugar levels on photosynthesis.
Approach:
Test the hypothesis that species with different phloem loading strategies will have different photosynthetic and respiratory responses to rising [CO2]. Measure Rubisco activity and content in species with different phloem loading strategies. Investigate changes in respiration in wild-type and transgenic soybean over-expressing sucrose transporters.
