Interpretive Summary: Dark red kidney beans are produced on about 35,000 acres nationwide. Kidney beans are notoriously susceptible to root rot pathogens which are prevalent nationwide and to Beet curly top virus (BCTV) which prevails in the seed production region of the Pacific Northwest. Fiero dark red kidney bean, developed by USDA-ARS in collaboration with Washington State University, possess tolerance to root rot pathogens and virus resistance to beet curly top. Currently, there are no dark red kidney beans highly adapted to production regions in ID, OR, or WA. Fiero provides western growers with a high yielding cultivar possessing resistance to entrenched disease problems: root rot and beet curly top virus.

Technical Abstract: Fiero (seed lot 95-2172) is an F3 derived F7 bulk with an upright bush habit from the cross cv. Montcalm and germplasm K59-7. Cv. Montcalm is a very popular commercial cultivar developed by Michigan State University that has long been the standard for the dark red kidney found in salad bars; however, the yields of this cultivar are generally less than desired. Germplasm line K59-7 is a CTV-resistant light red kidney developed by Dr. D. W. Burke. Both parents have dominant I resistance to BCMV, and an intermediate level of resistance to halo blight. Fiero also has I resistance to BCMV and complete CTV resistance. Reactions to halo blight have not been tested, but since both parents are halo blight tolerant it would be expected that Fiero have similar field tolerance to halo blight. In the 1995 Othello replicated yield trials, Fiero (2700 kg/ha) outperformed Montcalm (CTV susceptible) (1700 kg/ha) while maintaining essentially the same color and size: Montcalm (2013 seed per kg) and USWA-39 (1865 seed per kg). At 100 days maturity, Montcalm was two days earlier than USWA-39 (102 days).
