Citation: Ho, H.M., Dugan, F.M., Jong, S.C. 1999. Cladosporium and chladophialophora in culture; descriptions and an expanded key. Mycotaxon. 72:115-157.

Interpretive Summary: Cladosporium is a genus of fungi, many species of which are very common in the environment, others of which are rare. Cladophialophora is a genus which is not closely related to Cladosporium, but whose members are morphologically similar to that genus. Members of Cladosporium tend to be saprophytes or plant pathogens; members of Cladophialophora tend to be saprophytes or human/animal pathogens. There is no single, modern key which includes more than a few species of either genus (although there are a couple keys which identify several species of Cladosporium on the basis of host). This key, with descriptions, greatly expands the number of Cladosporium and Cladosporium-like species covered in a single key, and does not necessitate reference to host.

Technical Abstract: Descriptions and a key are provided of 37 species of Cladosporium, Cladophialophora and Hormoconis available in culture collections. Morphology and colony characters are used to separate strains into species or species groups. Cladosporium macrocarpum is reclassified as C. herbarum var. macrocarpum. Cladophialophora kellermaniana is considered a synonym of Cladosporium malorum. Cladosporium amoenum (nomen nudum) is described as Anungitopsis amonena, sp. nov.
