Technical Abstract: Ten experimental corn hybrids and eleven inbred lines that confer corn earworm resistance were screened for their resistance to other major ear-feeding insects (i.e., the fall armyworm, maize weevil, brown and southern green stink bugs) in the Southeastern Coastal Plain region of the U.S. during 2004 and 2005. The ear-feeding insect damage was assessed at harvest by either visual damage rating (for fall armyworm and corn earworm), or by the percentage of damaged kernels (for maize weevil and stink bugs). Among all hybrids and inbred lines examined, two hybrids and two inbred lines showed the least amount of insect damage. The ramifications of developing multiple insect-resistant corn germplasm were also discussed.
