Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Avenanthramides (AVA) are antioxidants found exclusively in oats. The aim of this study was to determine the time course of absorption of AVA into plasma, liver, and other tissues following their oral ingestion. Three fractions of AVA (AVN-A, AVN-B, and AVN-C) were fed to female Sprague-Dawley rats by oral gavage at a dose of 20 mg AVA/kg body weight. Plasma, liver, heart, and various muscle samples were collected at 1, 2, 4, and 12 h post-gavage and analyzed by HPLC for AVA content. Concentrations of all AVAs peaked at 1 h in the plasma and returned to baseline by 12 h. Liver showed early uptake of AVAs, but storage declined at 4 and 12 h. In heart and skeletal muscle only AVA-C was detectable and the concentrations showed time-dependent increases. These findings demonstrate that AVA are bioavailable to most tissues and can be a potential source of antioxidants.
