Interpretive Summary: Virulent strains of Newcastle disease virus are capable of provoking a devastating disease in domestic fowl, with vast social and economic consequences. The virus has a world-wide distribution and is a constant threat to U.S. poultry industries, due to the possibility of natural or intentional introduction. Though the virus exists as a single serotype, antigenic and genetic differences have been identified among the isolates as a result of the capacity of the virus to mutate and evolve through selection. The significance of the genetic variation observed among Newcastle disease viruses highlights the need to continuously characterize all existing variants of this pathogen, thus, further providing knowledge on its ecology and epidemiology. Here we provide a report on the complete genome sequence of Newcastle disease virus from Nigeria. This information will facilitate future evolutionary and epidemiological studies of Newcastle disease viruses.

Technical Abstract: The first complete genome sequence of a strain of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) of genotype XVII is described here. A velogenic strain (duck/Nigeria/903/KUDU-113/1992) was isolated from an apparently healthy free-roaming domestic duck sampled in Kuru, Nigeria, in 1992. Phylogenetic analysis of the fusion protein gene and complete genome classified the isolate as a member of NDV class II, genotype XVII.
