Measurement of soil water content and tracer movement on two common Iowa soils indicates greater soil water and solute movement under furrows than under uncropped ridges. Measurements of soil water content indicate greater increases in water content under furrows than under uncropped ridges following rainfall; however, differences in soil water content diminished following sediment deposition in furrows. Tracer movement substantiated greater water movement under furrows than ridges. At Treynor, differences in timing and amount of change in water contents under ridges and furrows at comparable depths may indicate lateral soil water movement from furrow to ridge positions. Model results and measurements both indicate that placement affected movement of solute by leaching. These results indicate that placement can be used to reduce loss of nitrogen by leaching. |
