Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Nitrate leaching is a pulse process; therefore, the nature of the climate data used in nitrate leaching simulations may impact simulation results and interpretations. The NLEAP model uses actual climate years rather than constructed data to represent "average", "wet", and "dry" climate categories. NLEAP model simulations were run for two locations on two contrasting soils under fallow conditions over a set of years for each climate category. This study compared climate and model output variability among and within climate catefories. Precipitation patterns differed between sites. Range of model output results was affected by the interaction among the climate, soil and output parameter.
