Interpretive Summary: This paper examines a proposal to substitute a 100-year-old name for an industrially important yeast that is currently known as Phaffia rhodozyma. The analysis points out that there is no living culture of this earlier named species and it is not possible to know its identity from a narrative description. Consequently, the name Phaffia rhodozyma is conserved over Rhodozyma dendrorhous, with the result being a stable name for an important yeast.
Technical Abstract: The basidiomycetous sexual state for Phaffia rhodozyma was discovered by Golubev (Yeast 11:105, 1995) and named Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous. Golubev proposed that the asexual state should be Rhodomyces dendrorhous, an earlier name than Phaffia rhodozyma. In the present report, it is proposed that because there is no type material for Rhodomyces dendrorhous, this name represents an uncharacterized and unknown species, and therefore Phaffia rhodozyma represents the valid demonstrated asexual state of X. dendrorhous.
