Technical Abstract: Precision farming, or site-specific management, is a management system in which the application of crop production inputs is optimized to needs on a location-by-location basis within a field. Although this type of intensive management is not a new idea, recently developed engineering technologies are now making it feasible on a widespread basis. Location systems, electronic sensors for crop and soil properties, and electronic control systems for varying application rates of production inputs are examples of some of the important enabling technologies for precision farming. This manuscript reviews engineering technologies for precision farming and also discusses the application of those technologies, coupled with agronomic knowledge, to an integrated precision farming system.
