Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Evidence suggests that ALV-J is mutating much faster than traditional ALVs. We isolated, cloned and DNA sequenced the env genes, the non-coding region between gp37 and the LTR, and the LTRs from 10 ALV-J field isolates. Although the viruses varied considerably in their gp85 sequences, the greatest variablity occurred in the region between gp37 and the LTR, with some isolates having most of this region deleted. We also cloned and sequenced ALV-J like sequences from uninfected, ev-, CEFs. The significance of the extreme genetic variability and existence of ALV-J like sequences in normal chicken cells will be discussed.
