Interpretive Summary: Symbiotic associations are numerous, ancient, and fundamental examples of complex and highly specific associations between plants and microbes. Several of these associations consist of microbes that live within the above ground portions of plants. Since the associations are so complex there is a need for a strong working definition that will apply to all known endophytes. In this chapter an RRC scientist in collaboration with two other scientists discuss the complexity, anatomical relationship, natural diversity and interactions in an attempt at defining endophytism universally. Fungal endophyte of grasses, trees, and shrubs are examined for a common denominator for endophytisim. This chapter is the introduction to the book Microbial Endophytes which deals with all aspects of endophytes.
