Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Changes by the Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory (AIPL) to USDA-DHIA genetic evaluations in November 1999 were documented. International evaluation of foreign bulls and cow evaluations from Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, The Netherlands, and New Zealand were used to update cow parent averages. The new parent average is combined with the cow and progeny information from the old evaluation using the daughter equivalents contributed as weights. The USDA-DHIA cow evaluation format 105 includes identification of the foreign contribution to the cow's record. Cows sometimes change herds during a lactation. The determination of which herd to use in evaluations is based on the number of tests in each herd. The first herd receives a preference of one test and is selected in case of ties. Lactation values are calculated only from a single herd. Foreign identification numbers of bulls can be deemed the primary identification number, even if a U.S. identification is available. Over 180 bulls registered in both Canada and the U.S. have had the Canadian identification number designated as the primary identification. The USDA-DHIA bull evaluation format 38 and Interbull evaluation format 31 include also the U.S. identification number of these bulls.
