Technical Abstract: A critical step in the development of an economical fermentation process is the selection and optimization of the nitrogen source. Nitrogen is a major component of important cellular elements, including proteins, nucleic acids, and cell walls, and has been shown to regulate a multitude of primary and secondary cellular processes and is often the most costly component of the production medium. This presentation will provide information on commercially available, nitrogen-containing fermentation feedstocks and suggest strategies for selecting appropriate nitrogen sources. Selection strategies will consider the impact of factors such as nitrogen form, nitrogen concentration, and feedstock cost on the requirements and constraints of specific fermentation processes.
