Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV-J) infection is considered a serious cause of tumor mortality and other production problems in meat-type chickens. Since its initial isolation in 1989 from flocks in the United Kingdom, ALV-J was isolated from affected broiler breeder and commercial broiler flocks in the United States and many other countries. The lack of specific diagnostics, the antigenic and molecular variation among strains, and the unusually high rate of horizontal transmission complicate control of this virus infection. This presentation is focused on the diagnosis and control of ALV-J infection in meat-type chickens.
