Interpretive Summary: Leaf rolling moths in the family Tortricidae are major agricultural pests that cause significant damage to North American agricultural crops annually. Species in the tribe Cochylini are pests of seed crops and they have been used for biological control of weeds. Two new species of this group were discovered in the eastern United States, and these are described dand illustrated. Their identification is basic to future work on this group for biological control of weeds or as a potential threat to agriculture. The results of this paper will be important to scientists, ecologists, weed scientists, and economic entomologists. Also, APHIS, PPQ inspectors and identifiers will use this information.
Technical Abstract: The genus Rolandylis Gibeaux is considered a valid genus (revised status) based on the following autapomorphies: 1) maxillary palpus absent, 2) valva broad at base with an erect proximal costal process with spiculations, and 3) base of aedoeagus with winglike lateral projections. Two new species of Rolandylis Gibeaux are described, R. fusca and R. virilia. The type species of Rolandylis, R. catalonica Gibeaux is a new synonym of R. maiana (Kearfott). The head and wing venation is illustrated as well as the habitus and genitalia of all species. The genus is known from the following U.S. states, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Maine, as well as France. The phylogenetic relationships of Rolandylis within other Nearctic genera is discussed.
