Interpretive Summary: The Aphididae represent an economically important group of insects. Aphids are plant feeding insects that extract plant fluids through fine tube-like mouthparts. Aphids may damage plants not only through mechanical feeding injury but some species also serve as vectors of plant viruses. Proper identification is imperative before any reserch or control program can be initiated. Prior confusion concerning the descriptions and type designations for two species of aphids is examined. The types for one species were thought to have been lost but have been rediscovered. Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for two species and another species is properly placed in the correct genus. This information is of value in stabilizing the names of two plant-feeding species and thus promoting universality of nomenclature. It will aid scientists, action agencies such as APHIS, and others involved with plant-feeding insects in accurate identification.

Technical Abstract: Examination of the U.S. National Museum Aphidoidea Collection confirmed the presence of two species of Lachninae previously described by H.F. Wilson. One species was thought to have been lost. Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for Eulachnus thunbergii Wilson and Cinara thunbergii (Wilson) represents a new combination.
