Interpretive Summary: The Coccoidea or scale insects represent an economically important group of arthropods. They are plant-feeding insects that extract plant fluids through fine tube-like mouthparts. Proper identifiction is imperative before any reserch or control program can be initiated. This web site primarly provides: (1) General background information of scale insects; (2) )web access to the holdings of the United States National Collection of Coccoidea that can be queried; (3) web access to back issues of The Scale, a newsletter of Coccidology; and (4) web access to recently published papers of scale workers in the Systematic Entomology Laboratory. This site is of benefit to scale workers around the world including many scientists in the United States.
