Interpretive Summary: 'Nacono' is a new pecan variety released July 18, 2000, by the Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Agricultural Experiment Station of Texas. The USDA conducts the largest pecan breeding program in the world and produces new varieties for all pecan growing areas of the world. 'Nacono' has just been developed and released by this program to all pecan growers. 'Nacono' produces nuts mor uniformly from year to year and has few years when it produces few or no nuts. It produces nuts of very high quality. 'Nacono' has general suitability to be used as a variety in most of the pecan production areas of the U.S. and in other parts of the world.

Technical Abstract: 'Nacono' is a new pecan [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch] cultivar released July 18, 2000, by the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Agricultural Experiment Station of Texas. When compared to other protogynous cultivars, 'Nacono' has superior nut quality, high resistance to scab [Cladosporium caryigenum (Ell. Et Lang.) Gottwald] and is suitable for planting in most areas of the U.S. pecan production area. 'Nacono' pecans are large enough to be sold in shell, or they can be shelled to produce a high proportion of intact halves and large pieces of very high quality.
