Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A smooth-root characterization experiment was conducted to evaluate performance for standard agronomic parameters as well as root suture prominence score. Tested germplasm included two commercial hybrid varieties, two East Lansing ARS smoothroot releases, 14 prospective East Lansing ARS smoothroot releases, and three ARS disease resistant germplasm releases. Sugarbeet releases derived from the East Lansing ARS breeding program combine Eastern US smoothroot sugarbeet germplasm with high sucrose percentage germplasm lacking tolerance to diseases in the Great Lakes production area. Recoverable White Sugar per Acre (RWSA) was the most useful yield measure. Of the top 10 performers in RWSA, nine were smooth- root germplasms. Percent sucrose among seven of the top nine germplasm enhancement lines was statistically similar to the commercial check, indicating that the goal of increasing sucrose percentage in smooth-root germplasm has been achieved.
