Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This paper will discuss aspects of a food safety issue that was prominent during the initial settling of the Eastern and Midwest US. The problem was caused by a natural product and was responsible for the death of Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. It will review results of studies that correlated a celery variety with phytophototoxic dermatitis on grocery workers. Studies will be discussed aimed at producing an immunological assay that could be used for monitoring large numbers of chicken liver samples for an important chemical residue. Finally, the paper will discuss preliminary data obtained from studies with swine E. coli and disinfectants used in swine production.
