Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The internal lipids (triacylglycerols and phospholipids) were extracted from silverleaf whitefly adults and nymphs by sonication in chloroform/methanol (2:1). Triacylglycerol and phospholipid fractions were recovered from solvent extracts using a silica gel column and fatty acids from the fractions were obtained by alkaline hydrolysis. Fatty acids were converted to methyl esters by reaction with methanolic HCl. Fatty acid methyl esters were analyzed, quantitated and identified by capillary gas chomatography (CGC) and CGC-mass spectrometry (MS). Intact triacylglycerols were separated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and structurally identified by HPLC-MS. The characterization of internal lipids of silverleaf whiteflies provides useful information in regard to the lipid nutrient reward for whitefly predators and parasitoids.
