Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Actinomycete strains isolated from lesions on equine placentas were subjected to polyphasic taxonomic identification. All but one of the strains were isolated from placentas from horses in Kentucky and the remaining isolate was obtained from an equine placenta in South Africa. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA sequences the isolates are in the same clade of the genus Amycolatopsis as Amycolatopsis mediterranei and chemotaxonomic and morphological characteristics of all isolates are consistent with assignment to the genus Amycolatopsis. Analysis of physiological characteristics of these strains indicated that are not A. mediterranei, and DNA relatedness determinations have confirmed that these strains represent 4 new species of the genus Amycolatopsis.
