Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The importance of haploid plants in basic research and practical plant breeding is well documented. Anther culture has been traditionally employed for producing haploids in numerous crop plants. However, durum wheat does not respond very well to anther culture. The production of albino plantlets is a serious problem. We describe a protocol for anther culture for producing haploids. We feel that by choosing responsive genotypes and using various modifications to media formulation, it may be possible to produce durum haploids. The protocol described in this article will be published in a manual on haploids to be used by researchers in this field.
