Interpretive Summary: Cercospora leaf spot continues to cause significant yield or dollar losses to sugarbeet growers. In other crops, the use of molecular biology technologies have been providing new answers to old disease issues. Using molecular approaches, the genetic relatedness of Cercospora isolates recovered from sugarbeet is being determined. In addition, the basis for plant destruction by this fungus is being elucidated using molecular tools. Future implementation of this information will be in the potential production of genetically-modified sugarbeet with enhanced disease resistance. In addition, the movement of strains of Cercospora in growers will be easier to track with molecular techniques.
