Technical Abstract: Most of the lubricants currently in use are derived from mineral base fluids, making them increasingly difficult for safe and easy disposal. Losses from accidental spillage and non-recoverable usage may escalate the danger of ground water contamination and pose a threat to animal and plant life. Vegetable oils are considered as potential candidate to substitute mineral oils and synthetic fluids in industrial uses if certain performance properties could be overcome. Poor oxidative stability and low temperature fluidity restrict vegetable oils in industrial applications. The current work reports a novel class of chemically modified vegetable oil and methods for producing them from triglyceride oils. The resultant vegetable oil derivatives obtained through single-step and two-step synthetic routes are high and low temperature stable and are technically comparable to mineral base fluids in basic lubrication.
