Interpretive Summary: This encyclopedia entry provides for a lay audience a brief introduction to the subject of mycopesticides, manufactured products containing fungi and used to control pests. The subject is presented within the greater context of fungal biology, fungal biotechnology, and fungal ecology by various authors. It is accompanied in the same volume by a summary overview (by the same author, and reprinted from the 8th edition of the same encyclopedia) of classification of fungi. Technical Abstract: Manufactured products that contain living fungi and are used to control pests are called mycopesticides. The controlled pests may be weeds, insects, roundworms, or other fungi. A small but growing number of mycopesticides are commercially available. The basic principals of formulation, storage, utilization and regulation of mycopesticides are briefly summarized. Examples are provided for fungi utilized in mycopesticide production, and the target pests are listed for each example. References for further study are appended. |
