Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Various agricultural residues such as corn fiber, corn stover, rice straw, wheat straw, and sugarcane bagasse can serve as low cost feedstocks for production of fuel ethanol by fermentation. However, development of efficient pretreatment and cost-effective enzymatic conversion of these lignocellulosic residues to fermentable sugars is a key issue. In this paper, various pretreatment options and enzymes involved in lignocellulosic biomass conversion will be presented. We have developed several novel and improved enzymes for use in lignocellulosic biomass conversion. The potential impact of the results presented in this paper to improve lignocellulosic bioconversion technology in order to reduce the cost of fuel ethanol production from a variety of unutilized and underutilized agricultural residues will be discussed. |
