Technical Abstract: The viscosity and gel formation in the tricomponent system, starch/poly(acrylic acid)/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone-iodine), are studied in this work. Starch and poly(acrylic acid) at 5% aqueous solution form a synergistic mixture at 60/40 ratio. The addition of a small amount of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-iodine increases the viscosity of the solution by threefold. Further addition causes gel formation. Similarly, starch and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-iodine at 5% aqueous solution form a synergistic mixture at 80/20 ratio; the addition of a small amount of poly(acrylic acid) first causes a decrease in viscosity and then an increase. These observations are rationalized on the basis of specific interactions among the polymers. Mechanical properties and NMR relaxation studies provide additional information on these polyblends.
