Interpretive Summary: This work relates to developing a methodology for chemical modification of vegetable oil as industrial fluids. Vegetable oil in its native form lacks high and low temperature stability, and is largely unacceptable for automotive and industrial applications. This is primarily due to the presence of multiple unsaturations in vegetable oils. Removal of these unsaturations and attaching branching chains at these positions improved the thermal and low temperature fluidity of the oil derivative. The work also reports comparative study of soybean and chemically modified oils, and in every circumstance the modified oils surpass the physical characteristics of vegetable oil. This work is of prime importance to industrial oil and automotive manufacturers who plan on substituting mineral oil based fluids with eco-friendly, non-toxic, renewable fluids capable of delivering comparable performance properties.

Technical Abstract: Synthetic base fluid with improved high and low temperature stability has been prepared by chemical modification of epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO). The reaction was carried out in a two-step procedure, (i) synthesis of dihydroxylated soybean oil from ESBO with HClO4; (ii) reaction of acetic, butyric and hexanoic anhydride with the dihydroxylated product. The reaction products were confirmed by NMR and FTIR analysis. Thermal, oxidative and low temperature stability tests have shown that the final product with hexanoic anhydride demonstrates excellent properties when compared to SBO.
