Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: MFSV is a newly described nucleorhabdovirus that is serologically and/or physically distinct from other maize-infecting rhabdoviruses. MFSV is readily transmitted to maize b vascular puncture injection of maize kernels, but not by leaf rub inoculation. The virus is transmitted in a persistent propogative manner by Graminella nigrifrons, but not by other known maize rhabdovirus vectors including Peregrinus maidis and Endria inimica. G. nigrifrons transmitted MFSV to maize, barley, oats, rye and wheat, but not to sorghum or Johnson grass. Approximately 11 kb of the 13 kb viral genome was sequenced. The virus appears to contain 7 open reading frames (ORFs) on the non-genomic (positive) strand. Three of teh ORFs have similarity to rhabdoviral nucleocapsid (N), glycoprotein (G) and RNA polymerase (L) genes. In phylogenetic analysis with L protein sequence, the plant-infecting viruses grouped together with the nucleorhabdoviruses (MFSV, Rice transitory yellowing virus and Sonchus yellow net virus) forming a strongly supported group.
