Citation: Kuenen, L.P., Brandl, D.G., Rice, R.E. 2005. Modifications for trap assembly of pherocon 1c traps speed trap liner changes and reduce in-field preparation time. The Canadian Entomologist. 137(1):117-119.

Interpretive Summary: The assembly procedures for an insect trap, that is a de facto standard for pest control advisors and for researchers working with sex pheromones, were modified from the manufacturer¿s methods. The changes allow partial pre-assembly in the lab and also allow for adding and changing of the trap bottoms (liners) in a rapid fashion that reduces the risk of contact with the non-drying, sticky glue that traps the insects. The attachment of the sticky liners in the field also eliminates contamination of vehicles by the glue and reduces or eliminates the fouling of the glue by dust since the liners are attached after the trap top has already been hung in the field.

Technical Abstract: The assembly procedures for Pherocon® 1C traps, a de facto standard for pest control advisors and for researchers working with sex pheromones, were modified from the manufacturer¿s procedures; the functional features of the trap remain unchanged. The modified assembly allows partial pre-assembly in the lab and also allows for adding and changing of the trap bottoms (liners) in a rapid fashion that reduces the likelihood of contact with the sticky glue that traps the insects. The attachment of the sticky liners in the field also eliminates contamination of vehicles by the glue and reduces or eliminates the fouling of the glue by dust since the liners are attached after the trap top has already been hung in the field. Labeled figures are presented to supplement the verbal description of the modified assembly procedure.
