Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In terms of genetically engineered crops intended for industrial applications, cotton, as the leading fiber crop of the world, is most prominent. The estimated global area of transgenic cotton for 2002 is 6.8 million hectares, 20% of the total area under cotton cultivation. In the U.S.A, 77% of cotton acreage was under transgenic cottons in 2002. The first wave of transgenic cottons that became popular since 1996 were the ones with insect resistance and herbicide tolerance. Transgenic cottons with agronomic traits have become popular in the U.S. and other countries; however, increasing attention is being paid to the most important product from the cotton plant - the fiber, which brings about 85% of the income to the grower. The production of superior quality cotton fiber is extremely important to the textile industry worldwide. Recent advances in cotton genetic engineering and future prospects will be presented.
