Inform V.14., p.577. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The Third International Starch Technology Conference was held in Urbana, IL on June 1-4, 2003. The theme of this conference was "Coproducts" that are produced during various industrial starch processes (the conference focused on starches produced from corn, wheat, potatoes, and rice). Unlike "byproducts" which often have little or no value, the profits that are derived from the sale of coproducts help to offset the processing costs of primary products such as starch. Some recurring themes during the conference included: 1) The expected expansion (200-300%) of the US corn to ethanol industry could create large surpluses of livestock feeds such as Corn Gluten Meal (from wet milling) and Distillers Dried Grains and Solubles and there is a need to develop new coproducts from these byproduct streams, 2) Increasing environmental and economic constraints are forcing starch processing companies to evaluate and modify existing processes and maximize coproduct profitability, and 3) In the cornstarch industry, corn oil is the highest value coproduct and is even more valuable than cornstarch itself. New markets for corn oil (such as biodiesel and lubricants) need to be developed. |
