Technical Abstract: The migration and establishment of aggressive, metalaxyl-resistant genotypes of Phytophthora infestans has changed production practices and costs for potato growers. The control of these newer genotypes requires more frequent applications of protectant fungicides which has increased growers' costs and reduced their profit margins. In potato production areas lacking ready access to fungicides, late blight can be especially damaging. The development of potato cultivars with resistance to late blight (both foliar and tuber) would be of value to producers. Potato selection A90586-11, developed by the efforts of the Northwest Potato Variety Development Program, has resistance to both foliar and tuber infection by Phytophthora infestans. A90586-11 originated from a cross between KSA195-90 and 'Ranger Russet'. Its late blight resistance was derived from its Polish parent, KSA195-90. In seven late blight field trials conducted over a five-year period, A90586-11 had AUDPC values that were ¼ as large as those of 'Russet Norkotah', 'Shepody', 'Ranger Russet', and 'Russet Burbank'. In controlled laboratory tests for tuber blight resistance, A90586-11 averaged 3.4% blighted tubers while 'Ranger Russet' and 'Russet Burbank' average 52% and 16% respectively. A90586-11 also is resistant to the expression of corky ringspot, early blight, Verticillium wilt, and net necrosis. It is a high-yielding selection that produces long, white-skinned, uniform tubers with high specific gravities and low sugars making it suitable for the production of frozen potato products. Its primary weakness is a level of blackspot susceptibility similar to its paternal parent, 'Ranger Russet'.
