Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Tillage is an important aspect of most cropping systems, but its effects on various arthropod species is difficult to predict. We measured cereal-aphid infestations in spring-sown small-grain plots under conservation or conventional tillage at three locations in eastern South Dakota. Conventional tillage plots received preplant tillage and had less than 30 percent plant residue at planting, whereas conservation tillage plots received no preplant tillage and had 50 percent or more plant residue. Cereal-aphid infestations were greater in conservation tillage plots in 1 of 16 instances, and infestations of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, were greater in 2 of 15 instances. Aphids were never more abundant in conventional tillage plots.
