Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: No single protocol or technique for sampling seedbanks will have universal appeal or application, but there are a number of fine points and guidelines regarding sampling of which researchers with little experience with seed banks should be aware. These points are included under the headings of sampling adequacy, sampling patterns, sampling times, seed viability testing, seed separation, seed and seedling identification, and aboveground vegetation sampling. If the guidelines provided in this report do not improve the results of future seed bank studies, they at least will help alleviate some of the tedious work involved with this type of research.
