Technical Abstract: The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between bare soil reflectance (414-920 nm) and soil texture (percentages of sand, silt, and clay), organic matter, and surface soil moisture. We collected 209 soil samples from 91-m grid nodes in a 162 ha cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) field located in the Mississippi Delta. The dominant soil series for the field are Commerce, Dundee, Robinsonville, and Souva. Aerial images were collected with a digital camera system at a 2-m ground spatial distance. A stepwise algorithm was used to reduce the dimensionality of the spatial data set. The resultant stepwise linear equations were used to create two-dimensional surface maps of soil texture, soil organic matter and moisture content in the soil-surface (0-15 cm depth) across the field. The paper will present and discuss results from statistical analysis of digital number values generated using stepwise algorithms, and compare modeled soil features with measured soil variables.
